The (Muncie) Star Press, thestarpress.com, in Muncie, Ind., part of
the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a full-time photojournalist who
is skilled in photo and video and experienced in reporting to join
our digital-first news team.
The successful candidate will be committed to high-quality
journalism and multimedia storytelling, someone who can easily
create multiple photo packages a day, capturing moments of all
kinds from high school sports to redevelopment projects to tornado
damage. This job requires a great deal of flexibility and interest
in local news, as well as extensive coverage of high school and
Ball State University sports.
The Star Press visual journalist must be comfortable working with
reporters and editors to ensure images complement stories and
equally comfortable working independently. We are looking for
someone who is curious about all aspects of our community and
self-motivated, who understands the importance of digital analytics
and how journalists can use those tools to best reach
audiences.
Journalism communicates vital information. It helps readers develop
connections to each other and their communities, and it challenges
both readers and powers-that-be to seek change. If you can do this
with a camera, we should talk.
Requirements:
Core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography, and
videography, editing software).
Bachelor's degree in journalism is preferred, or equivalent
combination of education and experience.
Minimum experience of at least two years, which could include
freelancing, internships, and college publication work.
Knowledge of AP style, command of English grammar and spelling and
a fierce commitment to accuracy.
Comfortable in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
Knows how to use social media such as Twitter, Facebook and
Instagram to enhance reporting and promote stories.
Understands journalism ethics, sourcing and the digital-first
mission.
Contributes to written - in addition to visual - news reporting as
needed.
Collaborates well with others and can work with a team on the
biggest stories.
News often requires journalists to work extended hours, evenings,
weekends and holidays, sometimes unexpectedly.
A valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum
liability insurance required by state law.
Employment is contingent on passing a post-offer pre-employment
background check and a motor vehicle record check and drug
screen.
