Position Title
Environmental Specialist

About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Associate Director of Environmental Health & Safety, the Environmental Specialist is responsible for coordinating and implementing environmental programs, systems, and practices for various phases of university operations. As a member of the EHS team, this person works together with the Chemical Health & Safety Officer to assist with the inspection of BSU primary and secondary lab spaces.

Position Function
Responsible for coordinating and implementing environmental programs, systems, and practices for various phases of university operations. Efforts and various programs include environmental protection and compliance, hazardous materials management, fuel and chemical storage and spill prevention preparedness.

Minimum Education
Bachelor's degree or higher in public or environmental health, sanitation, biological science, or related field; or in lieu of Bachelor's degree, a high school diploma or certificate plus an additional four (4) years of related work experience in addition to the minimum experience requirement listed.

Minimum Experience
At least one year of related work experience. May include related experience gained during a college internship.

Minimum Other
Working knowledge of programs related to environmental health and safety; must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy. Ability to wear respiratory protection, necessary PPE , and work with hazardous and infectious materials.

Authorization to work in the US
Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Perform periodic monitoring of facilities regarding potential employee exposure to chemical and physical hazards.

Ensure universal waste (UW) is regularly picked up for disposal and that each storage location has containers (drums, boxes) for storing waste materials. Conduct storage area audits at planned intervals and ensures appropriate action is taken to minimize spills or accidents when they occur.

Manage all regulated UST / AST systems in accordance with IDEM . Ensure systems are correctly operated, maintained, and inspected.

Conduct walk-through investigations of mold complaint areas and assist with moisture source investigations and remediation.

Aid with lead and asbestos abatement projects as requested.

sheets ( SDS ) and employee training on hazardous materials.

Provide support for the inspection of University primary laboratories including reviewing safety-related information, records, and safety equipment. Conduct safety inspections of secondary laboratories, learning spaces and storage facilities.

Complete special projects including the evaluation and gathering of data from University departments, benchmarking with peer safety programs, researching safety related topics, and assisting with or providing safety-related training.
